Consumers only have to do one thing in order to earn rewards with a Discover credit card: use the card to pay for purchases. As of March 2015, Discover cardholders can earn 5 percent cash back rewards when spending in certain categories, earning 1 percent on other purchases.
Categories in which Discover card consumers can earn 5 percent cash back rewards change on a quarterly basis. For example, the categories featured from January 2015 to March 2015 were gas station purchases and ground transportation. From April 2015 to June 2015, cardholders can earn 5 percent cash back rewards on transactions at restaurants and movie theaters.
Discover cardholders can redeem their cash back rewards at any time and can receive cash back as either a statement credit or a direct deposit into a bank account. Another available option is to use the rewards to pay for purchases at Amazon.com. Discover also states that cardholders can double their rewards by redeeming for gift cards from participating brands. As of March 2015, there is no limit to the cash back a cardholder can earn.
Consumers can apply for a Discover credit card online or by calling 1-877-587-1605. Approval does require a credit check and other verification if applicable.
