  1. Determine your income

Find out how much money you made in the tax year you file. For tax year 2013, taxpayers who made an adjusted gross income of $58,000 or less could free file through the Free File Alliance. In general, Free File is for taxpayers with simple returns.

  2. Gather vital information

Input information from vital documents that identify yourself throughout your Free File return. Find your previous year's adjusted gross income or your five-digit e-file PIN, so the IRS knows your identity. Fill in your Social Security number. If applicable, find the Social Security numbers of your dependents. Find your W-2, 1099 and additional forms that show your income for the year. Gather receipts if you own a small business. Finally, have a valid email address so the IRS can communicate with you regarding your return.

  3. Fill out your return

Follow the instructions for each form, and complete your return as thoroughly as possible. Review your income tax return for any mistakes. Sign your return electronically.

  4. Wait for a refund, or make a payment

If you get a refund, input your bank account and routing information. Make a payment with a valid credit or debit card.
