A drafting engineer is a person who uses a number of computer programs to make blueprints of complex engineering designs. Most people who work as drafting engineers have associate degrees, but many go on to earn bachelor's degrees.Continue Reading
Drafting engineers typically fall into one of three categories: electrical engineering drafters, mechanical engineering drafters or civil engineering drafters. Electrical engineering drafters create blueprints for electrical components and systems. These drafting engineers often work in industries such as aerospace but may also work in the service or commercial industries designing machinery.
Mechanical drafting engineers may also work in aerospace but also commonly work in the electrical power industry. People working as mechanical drafting engineers in the West and Northeast generally earn more than others, and those who work in the upper Midwest typically earn the least.
Civil drafting engineers usually work closely with civil engineers and design blueprints for building projects. Some civil drafting engineers work in the aerospace industry, though many work for the federal government. In addition to working in one of these fields, drafting engineers may also work as piping drafters, marine drafters and geological drafters. Some drafting engineers also find work in the computer manufacturing industry and the oil and gas extraction industry.Learn more about Career Aspirations
