The IRS uses Adobe Acrobat PDF software and recommends that users download the most recent version of Adobe Reader from the Adobe website. When downloading a form from IRS.gov, make sure that you are working in the PDF software instead of in your web browser. The IRS says that it checks all of its PDF files before they are posted, and Adobe offers help on its website for users who have issues viewing PDF documents.
IRS.gov also allows users to download forms from prior tax years, including publications and other materials. Locate the Forms & Publications page on the gray bar at the top of IRS.gov. Download common forms and the accompanying form instructions, including the 1040 for individual tax returns, the W-9 for taxpayer identification number requests, and the W-4 for employee withholding allowances. Some forms can be filled in directly on the IRS website, and users have the option to print them as well.
