Full Answer

To find and use the Physician Compare search engine, go to the home page of Medicare.gov, click on "Forms, Help, & Resources" on the far right of the toolbar at the top of the page, click on "Find & Compare Doctors, Hospitals, & Other Providers," and click on "Doctors & Other Health Professionals." Type in your location and any information about the doctor or health specialty you are searching for. Click on "Additional Search Options" to narrow the search to only those who accept Medicare assignment, those who only treat patients of one gender or those of particular hospital affiliations.

Only physicians and other health care professionals enrolled in Medicare are listed in Physician Compare. Information on each physician includes addresses of health care facilities where the doctor sees patients, American Board of Medical Specialties certifications, primary and secondary specialties, information on education and residencies, and current hospital affiliation. Not all physicians listed on Physician Compare accept Medicare assignment, which means that the amount Medicare approves is full payment for services. Health care providers not on Medicare assignment are allowed to charge more than the Medicare-approved maximum, so patients should find out about assignment status before making appointments.
