How Do You Know If Your Doctor Is Board Certified?

To find out if your doctor is board certified, access the Certification Matters website, and enter the physician's information in the relevant boxes. Alternatively, contact the American Board of Medical Specialties via phone or a member board of the ABMS. Also, check the ABMS Directory to obtain the most recent information on doctors.

Upon accessing the Certification Matters website, enter the first and last name of the doctor in the given boxes. To get more accurate search results, also enter the city, state, ZIP code and specialty of the doctor. If any of these details are unavailable, leave the box blank. Then, click Search. This free service requires registration to access the details regarding the doctor.

When contacting ABMS via phone, call using the toll-free number, and speak to the operator to confirm a doctor's board certification. The toll-free number is 1-866-ASK-ABMS, as of September 2015.

To obtain the contact details of the Member Boards of ABMS, click on ABMS Member Boards to the left of the Certification Matters site page. Contact the Member Board that pertains to the specialty of the doctor using the phone number, fax number and email ID provided, and find out if the doctor is board certified.

The Official ABMS Directory of Board Certified Medical Specialists can be accessed at several public and medical libraries. This book contains biographical and professional details of doctors who have fulfilled the certification criteria of their relevant specialty boards.
