MetLife offers two main types of dental insurances as of April 2015: dental preferred provider organization plans and managed dental plans. The company also offers indemnity plans as well as optional services such as graduating dental benefits, as described on its website.
MetLife states that the preferred provider organization plans provide consumers with access to variety of in-network dental providers from which to choose. These providers are considered in-network and generally have a lower out-of-pocket cost for the patient. Patients also have the choice to see an out-of-network provider, but they may have a higher out-of-pocket cost. This type of policy is similar to a PPO health insurance plan.
MetLife's managed dental plans are only available in select states, including California, Florida, New Jersey, New York and Texas, as of April 2015. These plans focus on providing coverage for services based on factors such as treatment protocols, research and market trends. MetLife states there are over 400 covered procedures, and patients can receive a 25 percent reduction in fees for noncovered procedures when using a participating dentist. There are also set fees for certain procedures and materials, as well as coverage for orthodontic services that are in progress at the time of group enrollment.
