What Is the Definition of Production Management?

Production management is the practice of coordinating, directing and overseeing the manufacture of goods in a factory or another type of production facility. Production managers are tasked with meeting organizational production goals efficiently and safely while exceeding minimum quality standards.

Production managers work under a general manager to plan for production needs and to set production targets. In smaller facilities, most production managers oversee and direct production workers. In larger facilities, production managers generally lead a team of floor managers, logisticians, technicians and others who carry out and oversee the work taking place on the production floor. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook, work in production management usually requires a bachelor’s degree and production experience in a related field.
