A creative or graphic designer is responsible for illustrating, photographing and laying out promotional and functional materials for a business. A creative designer can design advertisements, brochures, websites, mobile apps, fliers and anything else involved in a marketing mix.
A creative designer must posses several traits to succeed in the industry. A person must have a strong visual sense and know how colors, type and space work with each other. She must also have a strong knowledge of computers and several different design software packages. A designer must be able to present her ideas in a clear and concise fashion, which makes public speaking skills necessary. In addition to knowing the latest software packages, creative designers need to understand web mark-up language to work together with developers on websites.
Along with having a knack for artistry, a creative designer must understand branding and be able to represent the message of the company for which she works. It is the responsibility of the creative designer to make the company stand out in a crowded field where each person in the developed world is exposed to close to 3,000 different sponsored messages a day. A creative designer must be able to take criticism and use it to make her work better.
