CPT codes are five-digit codes that describe medical procedures such as surgeries, treatments, diagnostic tests and consultations in a uniform way, notes the AMA. Physicians use them to communicate with other care providers and insurers regarding patient care they have performed. The AMA initiated CPT codes in 1966 as a way to increase efficiency and decrease costs among health insurance companies and providers.
Category I codes are used for medical procedures, category II codes are optional tracking codes used to measure performance, and category III codes are used collect data about new and emerging procedures and technology.
