To earn a CPC qualifications, complete an associate degree in medical coding. Once coursework is completed, find work as a medical coder to become eligible for certification. Take and pass the certification exam through the AAPC.
The coursework in a degree program teaches students how to assign codes to varied diagnoses, as well as the procedures for insurance coding. Find an associate degree program through a local community college. Some trade schools offer a certificate program, but in order to take the CPC exam, a student must complete an associate degree. Students are also required to have at least two years of work experience before taking the exam; however, some schools offer internship or job placement programs for graduates to make this process easier.
To register to take the CPC exam, click on the Locate Exam link through the AAPC website. Find the correct state, and get the details for exams in the area. Choose a location and a date, and click on the Details link to be directed to the online application. Complete the application, and then pay any fees to reserve a spot in the exam.
Arrive at the exam location early. The test lasts up to five hours and 40 minutes, and it includes 150 multiple-choice questions.
