As of April 2015, Medicare renews automatically, according to the Health Alliance Plan. Medicare Supplement Health Insurance, or Medigap, also auto-renews.
Although Medicare renews automatically, individuals need to review their plans and make any alterations to fit their changing needs, the Health Alliance Plan advises. Participants should make changes during the Medicare open enrollment period that occurs between October 15 and December 7 of every year, explains AARP. Individuals must indicate whether their medical conditions or medications have changed over the last year. They also need to be aware of any automatic changes occurring in the Medicare plan, such as prescription drugs newly added to the approved list or rising costs.
Individuals plans that are no longer going to be covered by the Medicare Program should receive non-renewal reminder notices in the mail in November, explains the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. These notices give the individual Medicare participants enough notice to shop around for new plans covered under Medicare.
Those who need to apply for Medicare can do so online at the official Social Security website. They should select the Apply for Medicare Only application and fill out the necessary information.
