Find company information about HMV Canada on its website at hmv.ca. HMV is a leading Canadian retailer of music, DVD, Blu-ray, headphones and books, with an online store and over 108 physical stores across the country.
HMV Canada started operations in 1988 when it opened its first superstore at the Square One Mall in Mississauga, followed by its downtown Montreal branch in 1989, its downtown Toronto location in 1991 and its downtown Vancouver store in 2005. The Vancouver location was the largest Canadian music store at the time, occupying 40,000 square feet of space.
Hobbled by stiff competition from digital music downloads, its British parent company, HMV Group PLC, sold its Canadian operations in 2011 to Hilco, which restructured HMV Canada by downsizing the number of stores, abandoning low margin items such as video games and tablets, and focusing on higher margin products such as collectibles and gifts, apparel and headphones. The restructuring was a success.
HMV Canada claims to be an integral part of promoting Canadian music to the public through its in-store listening posts, which feature not only established artists such as Neil Young, Michael Buble and Nickelback, but also relative newcomers such as Drake, Hedley and Marianas Trench. It continues to support upcoming Canadian artists. HMV Canada store locations have also been the venue for album launches, live performances and autograph signing by superstars such as Celine Dion, Mariah Carey and The Beastie Boys.
