ITunes offered regular free music downloads to customers through its "Single of the Week" program, which gave users the chance to download a free song from an up-and-coming artist. It also introduced a "Free On iTunes" section in early 2015, featuring free tracks from a variety of artists.
However, since introducing its streaming service, Apple Music, iTunes has discontinued these promotions. Instead, Apple Music offers users a three-month free trial with access to its full catalog, after which users may subscribe for a monthly fee.
In September 2014, Apple received criticism for delivering a free U2 album to millions of iTunes users. Instead of simply making it available, Apple sent the album to active iTunes accounts and the album was automatically downloaded onto user's devices.
