Sears stores typically close at 9 p.m. on weekdays and Saturdays, and they close at 7 p.m. on Sundays. Hours sometimes vary by location. Sears was ranked fourth among U.S. department stores as of 2012. It was the 12th-largest U.S. retailer as of 2013.

Sears, Roebuck & Company, founded in 1893, was the largest retailer in the United States until 1989. In that year, Wal-Mart passed Sears in revenues earned in the United States. Sears, which began as a mail-order catalog business, has its headquarters in Chicago in the Sears Tower, which was the world's tallest building until 1998. Sears' business peaked in the 1950s and 1960s before beginning a slow decline.
