Close protection security training involves instruction in how to become a close protection security guard. Some skills in close protection training include surveillance, threat and risk assessment, contingency planning and conflict management. Training programs also teach students firearm skills and unarmed combat techniques. Physical fitness training is integral to most close protection security training programs.
Some close protection training programs in the United States and abroad include those offered by the International Association of Personal Protection Agents, Liberty Security Training Institute, Guardian International Security Services, G4S and MAX Academy. The Certified Close Protection Agent accreditation program certifies agents to work with celebrities, political leaders and private citizens who require personal security services. This program, developed through the International Association of Personal Protection Agents, includes an online certification course. Agents must also accrue time in the field to become certified.
Liberty Security Training Institute, which is located in New York City, offers a one-day training course for close protection agents in the areas of threat and risk assessment, surveillance, operational planning, reconnaissance and route selection. The course is designed for a range of security professionals, including entry-level security guards.
Guardian ISS trains close protection agents with techniques derived from police and military practices. It offers 14- and 25-day courses that include time in the classroom as well as practice drills. The program provides students with realistic training scenarios to help them put their skills into practice. Students must pass a written exam and a skills test to successfully complete the course. For a final project, they must run a simulated close protection demonstration.
