As of October 2015, there are 32 Cinemark movie theaters in the U.S. with Tinseltown in their name, but many Cinemark theaters use other brand names, such as Century, CineArts, Palace or Rave. Many theaters in the chain simply use Cinemark in their name, along with a geographic identifier.
Cinemark Holdings, headquartered in Plano, Texas, owns and operates Cinemark USA theaters. Lee Roy Mitchell founded the company in 1984 as a chain of theaters in Texas, Utah and California. Cinemark is the third-largest movie theater chain in the U.S. with 495 theaters and 4,457 screens in 40 states.
In 2009, Cinemark introduced a large screen format, known as XD, to compete with IMAX. The company plans to install it in many of its theaters.
