The white leghorn is the best chicken breed for laying eggs, notes CountryFarm-Lifestyles. Leghorns produce white eggs and are a Mediterranean class bird.
Plymouth Rock hens and Rhode Island red hens are also heavy egg producers. Black star, red star, light Sussex, cuckoo Maran- and barred rock hens are also good egg producers, states EggLayingChickens. The different breeds lay heavily in different months, so if year-round eggs are desired, a flock of mixed breeds will produce the most consistent number of eggs year-round. A mixed flock can also be expected to produce a mixed color batch of eggs, with some of the top laying breeds producing white eggs and some producing brown eggs.
