Mississippi tax returns may be filed either on paper or electronically, according to the Mississippi DOR. The website provides access to all individual taxpayer forms in PDF format for downloading, and also includes a list of companies that provide electronic filing services.
Only electronic filers may have their refunds directly deposited to their bank accounts, explains the Mississippi DOR. Refunds are issued more quickly to electronic filers, who can expect refunds to be issued within 14 business days. Taxpayers who file on paper can expect to wait eight to ten weeks for a refund to arrive. Refund checks are good for one year, and taxpayers may request replacement checks.
Tax returns for state taxes are due on April 15th each year, notes the Mississippi DOR. If an individual taxpayer has income exceeding allowable deductions and exemptions, he is required to file taxes. Taxpayers who are required to file returns can be penalized and have their refunds reduced if they fail to file tax returns on time.
