Check the status of your federal tax refund at the Where's My Refund page of the IRS website, says the Internal Revenue Service. From there, input your Social Security number, filing status and amount of refund. The IRS provides information within 24 hours after electronic filing and four weeks after filing by mail.
You can also get the status of your refund by using the IRS2Go mobile application on your mobile device, explains the IRS. The refund status is updated no more than once every 24 hours and the update usually happens overnight. Generally, refunds are issued within 21 days after the IRS receives your tax return.
If you filed an amended return, the IRS website also has an online tool for you to check the status of your return for the current year and three years prior. The Where's My Amended Return can be used three weeks after the amended return has been mailed to the IRS, explains TaxSlayer Pro. The tool can confirm the IRS has received the amended return, that it is processing the return, and you receive a status as to the expected time for the processing of the return to be completed. You can also call (866) 464-2050.
