The IRS' tool “Where’s My Amended Return?” provides taxpayers the status of their Form 1040X Amended Tax Return for the current year as well as up to three prior years, says the IRS. Taxpayers need their social security number, their date of birth and zip code in order to obtain the status of their amended return. Tax payers can also call an automated toll-free number to check on the status of their return.
Taxpayers can expect their amended return to be processed up to four months from the date the IRS receives the return, but it can take up to three weeks for the return to show up in the IRS system. Any taxpayer calling the IRS should know that the IRS cannot assist taxpayers with any additional information as their return moves through the system. It is also not necessary for taxpayers to call the (non-automated) toll-free number, unless the status message indicates that taxpayers need to call, says the IRS.Learn more about Income Tax
