Individuals can view their American Express rewards points balance by logging in to their online account, which allows them to view their rewards points, account balance and transactions. From their account, customers can also review the ways that they can redeem points, as American Express explains.
Available rewards vary based on the type and terms of the card. Options may include using rewards points for transportation with Uber, to shop for gift cards, or to book hotels, car rentals and flights for travel, according to American Express. Some cards, such as the American Express Delta Sky Miles card, only allow users to apply points, or miles, toward travel and ticket upgrades.
Customers who shop frequently may earn extra points with certain cards. For example, as of 2015, the AmEx EveryDay card gives customers a 20 percent point bonus when they use their cards to make 30 or more purchases in a month, explains American Express. The Gold Card from American Express offers customers double points when they use their cards at restaurants throughout the United States.
Certain cards may also offer a points bonus as a special offer for new customers, advises American Express. One of these is the Platinum Rewards Gold Card, which gives an extra 50,000 points to customers who make more than $3,000 in purchases within the first three months of obtaining the card.
