Charge nurse is the common job title for a nurse who serves as a shift manager in a health care department. In addition to performing basic nursing care duties, charge nurses delegate tasks to other nurses; help schedule; monitor patient admission and discharge; and manage medicine and supply inventories.

Charge nurse is a common step for a nurse to take on the way to nurse manager roles. In addition to basic nursing care skills, a charge nurse needs great leadership skills, attention to detail and emotional intelligence. Poise under pressure, efficiency in assessing patient needs, organization and strong analytical skills are also important.
