MultiPlan is a company independent of Cigna that provides out-of-network health-care providers for a large host of insurance companies, including Cigna. To search for a participating MutliPlan provider, go to the Multiplan website, but keep in mind that eligibility for this service depends on whether the program logo appears on a member's Cigna ID card.

Furthermore, even with MultiPlan, the costs for using out-of-network providers may be high, warns Cigna. This is because Cigna cannot control what these providers charge for their services, and these charges are often far greater than Cigna's normal prices. The result of this is that Cigna must bill members for any differences between what the providers charge and what the plan covers.

Instead, Cigna suggests finding one of the many participating providers in the member's area, by using its online directory. This service, however, requires registration, and users may find it easier to call Cigna, which provides 24-hour customer service seven days week, at the number listed on the member's ID card.
