The USPTO's web-based Patent Search tool is a robust search engine that allows for the retrieval of many types of patent and trademark records using many different filters and search queries. Users can search both registered patents and applications by parameters such as keywords, inventor name, applicant name, application location, issue date, patent number and more. The patent number is included in the search results to the left of the patent application title.

Clicking on the hyperlink opens the full patent application, which includes the application number under the Related US Patent Documents section. US patents can have more than one application number depending on if a patent has been reissued due to a defect or other discrepancy. Application numbers are unique and no two patents share the same. The patent number is not the same as the application number; both can be used to locate a specific patent, but a single patent number can have multiple different application numbers.
