Renters with bad credit can rent homes from independent property owners, notes Kristin Wong for Lifehacker's Two Cents blog. Those owners are likely to have more flexible credit requirements than professional management companies.
Independent landlords and property owners are more willing to work with applicants on a case-by-case basis, according to Wong. Explaining any financial missteps that led to a poor credit score allows landlords to make a subjective decision, so attaching an explanation letter could work in an applicant's favor. Applicants can also get someone to vouch for them by finding a co-signer or obtaining a letter of recommendation from a former landlord. If all else fails, money is always a great incentive. Offering to move in immediately or agreeing to a higher security deposit are both attractive options that could win landlords over regardless of a person's credit score.
