Your creditor can place a lien on your home if you are behind in your payments. A lien is a right to possess a piece of property until the person who owes the lienholder settles the debt.

There are two types of property liens, including judgment liens and property tax liens. A judgment lien occurs after the creditor files a lawsuit and wins in court. A property tax lien trumps any other type of property lien. This occurs when someone owes back taxes on their home. Each state has a different procedure for property tax liens that the government must follow in order to place the lien.
