Individuals can study independently for the National Incident Management System (NIMS) course using the course material provided by FEMA and take the final examination online. The course is an introduction and overview of the NIMS. It describes the NIMS components including preparedness, communications and information management, resource management, and command and management, notes FEMA.
The Web-based interactive course consists of six lessons and takes approximately three hours to complete, explains FEMA. Each lesson focuses on a component and explains the points with video presentations, figures, charts and illustrations. Finally, it provides an organized textual summary of salient points.
The course is intended for first responders and emergency medical service, or EMS, personnel, and is available to U.S. citizens. Instructors can download course material for classroom use along with instructor guides, student manuals and PowerPoint slides.
After completing the course, candidates should register to obtain student identification numbers before taking the final examination. Exams are scored by an automated system, and a pass or fail is assigned depending on whether 75 percent of the answers are correct, according to FEMA.Learn more about Business Resources
