Taxpayers who file their return by mail can expect to see a status on their refunds approximately four weeks after the date of mailing, explains the IRS. To gain access to their information, they need their Social Security number, filing status and the amount of their anticipated refund. The IRS also has a mobile application for smartphones and tablets called IRS2Go, and status updates on refunds are provided through the application.
Taxpayers can expect to only see an update to their account status once every 24 hours. Generally, refunds are issued 21 days after the tax return is received and processed, notes the IRS. Taxpayers are urged to only call the IRS if the 21-day timeframe has passed. If a taxpayer wants to check the status of his amended return, there is a tool on the IRS website called Where's My Amended Return?, and status updates are provided approximately three weeks after the amended return is mailed.
