In order to book an exam date, trainees with the requisite hours of practice either in a recognized Ohio cosmetology school or an equivalent out-of-state facility must apply directly to the Ohio State Board of Cosmetology. An exam date is then set for approximately three to five weeks after receipt of the application. Candidates who cannot make the assigned date must contact the Board a minimum of 24 hours before the scheduled time, and a rescheduling fee applies. This is increased if sufficient notice is not given.
Full PDF information for each of the examinations that form part of the cosmetology qualification is available on the Board's website at COS.Ohio.gov. Candidates are required to sit for both the practical and theoretical portions of the test in order to qualify to practice cosmetology independently within the state. PDF copies of the application forms for registration and exams are also available. Some can be emailed to the Board, but most must be printed and sent by post, along with the necessary money order or check to pay for the examination slot.Learn more about Career Aspirations
