The Internal Revenue Service makes Form 1040-ES available for download on its website. This form is for an individual to estimate his tax liability on income for which the IRS does not automatically withhold taxes, states the IRS.
Types of taxable income that an individual reports using this form are generally payments from sources that do not use Form W-2. These include alimony payments received, money made from rental properties, income from self-employment, and investment income, such as interest and dividends, explains the IRS. Additionally, some taxpayers whose employers normally report income with Form W-2 elect not to withhold taxes from that income. These people use Form 1040-ES to pay their taxes, as well.
