To obtain an engineering certificate, attend a college that has a certificate program such as University of Illinois or Texas A&M University. University of Colorado-Boulder also offers engineering certificates, as of 2015.
The program at University of Illinois is a master's level program, and students must apply to the Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering program. Students can specialize in either materials or materials failure analysis, and must take a minimum of three courses with a 3.0 out of 4.0 grade point average.
Texas A&M University has more than 10 engineering certificate programs, including polymers, safety engineering, energy engineering and engineering systems management. The university offers these certificates as a way for students to gain knowledge in specific areas, which may also help when working for certain employers. These programs have a number of requirements; for instance, the engineering project management certificate requires students to earn a 3.0 out of 4.0 grade point average and complete 12 credit hours.
The University of Colorado-Boulder offers 20 different engineering certificate programs in aerospace engineering sciences, civil engineering, electrical engineering and engineering management. There are also certificate programs through the School of the Environment and Sustainability. These programs range from nine to 18 credit hours, though the tunnel engineering certificate is a program that does not offer credit. All of these programs are graduate level courses.
