It is possible to negotiate real estate selling fees, also called commissions, regardless of what the local "going rate" is. While real estate brokers may not always agree to a reduction in their customary fees, they are generally willing to discuss one under the right circumstances.
In cases in which the realtor sells a client's home and helps the client to buy another one, many brokers offer a discount in fees. In situations in which the seller shares in some of the marketing of the home, realtors may lower their commissions. For instance, the seller might agree to hold an open house or two on his own. In a slow market or in the off-season, agents are often more willing to entertain negotiation just to stimulate business.
