As of 2015, it is possible to make federal tax payments online at IRS.gov. Click on the Pay Your Tax Bill link located near the top of the home page. Online payment options include debit card, credit card or checking account, according to the Internal Revenue Service.
To pay using a checking account, click on the IRS Direct Pay link located under the Pay Directly from Your Bank Account heading on the Make a Payment Web page. Next, click on the Make a Payment link located on the Welcome to Direct Pay Web page, instructs the IRS. Select the appropriate options under the Apply Payment To, Reason for Payment and Tax Year for Payment headings. Click the Continue button and confirm the selected information by clicking Continue again.
On the Direct Pay Web page, complete the sections titled Verify Identity, Payment, and Review & Sign, notes the IRS. Confirm the information, and submit the payment for processing.
To make a payment using a credit or debit card, click on the Pay by Card link located under the Pay with Your Debit or Credit Card link on the Make a Payment Web Page, explains the IRS. Select a payment processor from the Pay your Taxes by Debit or Credit Card Web page. Note that the payment processor may charge a fee for the service.
