Taxpayers can locate California IRS offices through the IRS website, as of June 2015. The IRS site has a locator tool and publishes a chart that lists the city of each California office, along with its address, phone number, hours of operation and a link to the services provided there.
To find the chart, navigate to IRS.gov, and click on Contact Your Local IRS Office at the bottom of the page under Learn about IRS. Click on California on the U.S. map, and the chart comes up. To find the closest office, use the tool that allows you to enter a ZIP code. Some California cities with IRS offices are Fresno, Los Angeles, Oakland, San Diego and San Francisco. Each office has multilingual help available, and the hours are subject to change. Offices provide varying services that, depending on the location and time of year, may include adjustments, alien clearances and payments.
Visit an IRS office only if a face-to-face meeting is necessary, advises the IRS. Otherwise, taxpayers should use the IRS website to conduct transactions such as downloading forms, setting up payments, checking on refunds and checking frequently asked questions. The offices refer requests for tax return preparation to resources such as free online filing services and community volunteer organizations.
