William Procter and James Gamble founded Procter and Gamble in 1837 in Cincinnati, Ohio. The company initially produced candles and soap. It introduced Ivory soap in the 1880s. In the early 20th century Procter and Gamble began manufacturing other products, including Crisco vegetable shortening.
