A list of the NMFC codes is published on the Freight Management Logistics website. Codes are broken up into freight classes organized to help determine shipment pricing. There are 18 freight classes based on weight, height, length and value of the shipment as well as other factors.
Lower freight class code numbers usually mean lower freight charges. The list starts at 50 and is called "clean freight" because it fits on a standard pallet. It carries the lowest cost. The highest cost is coded Class 500 because of the shipment's high value or low density. The manufacturer of the item can also be contacted for the correct code.
