Candidates with proper certification can find a job through the Alaska Teacher Placement office by attending Alaska Teacher Placement job fairs online or in person and filling out an online job application through the ATP Applitrack system. Although a general Applitrack application allows more than 50 school districts to review a candidate's data, applications to the five largest school districts must be made one by one.
To begin an employment search, applicants go to the Applitrack ATP page, click Start an Application for Employment, provide contact information and create a login password. The entire application takes 30 to 60 minutes to complete, and it can be done in several sessions if necessary. School districts are able to review both complete and incomplete applications. To apply to Anchorage, Juneau, Kenai-Peninsula Borough, Mat-Su Borough or Fairbanks North Star Borough school districts, known as the "Big 5," candidates must go to each particular school-district website, begin an application, import application information from ATP and answer any questions unique to the district.
Out-of-state teachers with the necessary credentials receive initial tier I Alaska teaching certificates which are valid for up to three years. During this time they must meet the requirements for professional or master tier II certificates. Once qualified candidates find employment, Alaska Teacher Placement helps with information on living in Alaska through its online forum and links to other sources of information.
