The EPA requires all persons handling refrigerants be appropriately certified. The type of certification required depends on the type for refrigerated machinery on which one intends to work. ESCO Institute's available practices tests cover EPA Section 608 Type 1, Type 2, and Type 3 certification. EPA Section 608 HVAC Type I certification is necessary for technicians desiring to work on small appliances containing five pounds or less of refrigerant. Type II certification is required to work on medium pressure to very high-pressure appliances such as residential air conditioners and heat pumps, supermarket refrigeration units and all other non-automotive systems. Type III certification is required for work on equipment containing very low pressure refrigerant such as chillers.
