There are many charities that benefit from the donation of used cars, including the American Cancer Society, Habitat for Humanity, March of Dimes, Unicef and the A.S.P.C.A. Other recognized charities for car donations include D.A.R.E., St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Toys for Tots, Amvets and The Salvation Army.
Before donating any car, ensure that the organization is non-profit and recognized by the IRS for a tax deduction. If the car is worth more than $500, Section A of the IRS form 8283 is required when filing the year's tax return. If the car is worth more than $5,000, Section B of the IRS form 8283 must be filed as well, along with an independent appraisal of the car.
