After receiving and activating a Green Dot card, the buyer must load funds to the card before using it. Funds can be added in cash at a participating location, by direct deposit, transfer from a bank or another Green Dot card, or by cashing a check at a Walmart store. There is no charge for adding funds by direct deposit, but there are fees for the other methods. There is also a monthly fee for the Green Dot card, even in months when it isn't used, and various other fees.
Customers can choose between a Visa and MasterCard Green Dot card. Both cards are prepaid, and neither extends credit to customers. Applying for a Green Dot card does not require a credit check, but does require disclosure of the applicant's social security number and date of birth. Green Dot cards are accepted anywhere that accepts Visa and MasterCard debit cards.
