An amended tax return can be found via the IRS website by using the "Where's My Amended Return?" tool at least 3 weeks after the amended tax return has been mailed. Required details are a Social Security number, date of birth and ZIP code.
Although amended tax returns will typically appear in the IRS system within 3 weeks of mailing, it can take as long as 12 weeks from the date of receipt for them to be processed. There is no faster turnaround available since, unlike original tax returns, amended returns must always be filed on paper, which is Form 1040X, and mailed.
As such, it is recommended to complete and send the form as quickly as possible if the original return was in error. While it is not legally necessary to submit an amended tax return if the original return was filled out to the best of one's knowledge at the time of its completion, most tax advisers nevertheless recommend doing so whenever an error becomes apparent.
Until amended tax returns have been processed, IRS representatives cannot provide information on them by telephone. That said, it may be necessary to call the IRS directly, in which case the "Where's My Amended Return?" tool will tell users to do so.
