The 1040EZ form is the simplest tax form for filing federal income taxes. Taxpayers may use this form if they have less than $100,000 of taxable income, if they do not claim dependents, if they are younger than 65, and if they are single or married filing jointly. The taxpayer may only claim income from earned compensation, unemployment, taxable interest of $1,500 or less, and dividends from the Alaska Permanent fund.

The form requires personal information such as name, address and social security number. Then the taxpayer must enter information from a federal W-2 form or from any 1099 forms into the appropriate lines. Taxpayers must report this income even if they do not receive a form. Taxpayers who qualify for the Earned Income Credit may claim it on the 1040EZ form; if they qualify for other credits and deductions they must fill out a 1040 form or a 1040A form instead. Then they must sign the form either by hand or through a valid electronic signature.
