As of September 2014, the Green Dot website allows users to activate temporary card numbers and personalized cards received in the mail by entering the 16-digit card number and the three-digit security code on the back. Activating a personalized card also requires knowing the expiration date for the card. After inputting the card numbers, customers pick a PIN and add other information through Green Dot's secure website.
Green Dot temporary cards bought in stores or online can be reloaded after identity verification. Consumers who purchase cards online are given temporary numbers to make over-the-phone or online purchases. Reloading temporary cards is done through MoneyPak, direct deposit or bank transfers.
Green Dot specializes in prepaid Mastercard and Visa debit card services that require a person's identity in order to be activated. Cards are usable at ATMs, in stores, online and as reloadable cards. Green Dot cards must have money loaded on them to be used, and they do not build credit on a credit report.
Green Dot is headquartered in Pasadena, Calif., and its subsidiary, Green Dot Bank, is in Provo, Utah. The company uses the stock ticker symbol "GDOT" on the New York Stock Exchange. More than 90,000 retailers sell Green Dot products as of September 2014.
