The Dow Jones Industrial Average reflects the daily stock price average of 30 publicly owned companies, all of which are traded on the New York Stock Exchange. The Industrial Average measures how these companies perform over the course of a normal trading day.
It was founded in 1896 by Wall Street Journal editor Charles Dow and Statistician Edward Jones. Companies on the DJIA include American Express, Caterpillar, General Electric, Johnson & Johnson and JPMorgan Chase, as of 2015.
