The process of purchasing health care coverage from TRICARE, formerly known as Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Uniformed Services (CHAMPUS), varies according to the health plan offered by the health care program. Among the health care plans offered by TRICARE include TRICARE Prime, TRICARE Prime Remote, TRICARE Overseas, TRICARE Prime Overseas, TRICARE Reserve Select and TRICARE Retired Reserve, as stated on TRICARE's website.

The program provides civilian health care coverage to military personnel, military retirees as well as their dependents and some members of the reserve component. TRICARE health plans also include pharmacy benefits, options for dental coverage and other special programs, notes Stateside Legal.
