The Booker T. Washington half dollar was minted from 1946 to 1951. There was also a half dollar coin featuring both George Washington Carver and Booker T. Washington minted from 1951 to 1954.
The bill that permitted the minting of the Booker T. Washington half dollar was passed on Aug. 7, 1946. The purpose of producing the coin was to honor Washington's memory and to raise money for buying and restoring the site of Washington's birth in Franklin County, Va. Sculptor Charles Keck was commissioned to design the Washington half dollar. The Booker T. Washington half dollar coin program fell short of its projected monetary goal, and the Commonwealth of Virginia eventually purchased the site where Washington was born.
