Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates earned $11.5 billion in 2013, according to DailyFinance.com. Forbes magazine reports his 2013 director compensation as Microsoft chairman was $250,000.
Gates, who built the world's largest software business with partner Paul Allen, topped the Forbes list of wealthiest people in the world from 1995-2007 and again in 2009. Then Bloomberg.com announced in 2013 that Gates was once again the world's wealthiest with a net worth of $72.7 billion, an increase of almost 19 percent from 2012.
In early 2014, Microsoft announced Gates would step down as chairman of the board of directors and focus more time on the company's product and technology innovations.
