The benefits of Costco Membership vary by membership type, but all include the ability to purchase items from Costco, which is not allowed to non-members, according to Costco. The three types of membership are Gold Star Membership, Business Membership and Executive membership. Each type of membership provides one membership card.
Gold Star Membership is the basic membership for individuals and households. It permits card-holders to purchase items from Costco locations. Business Membership provides the additional ability to purchase for resale, and also forwards the business information to cigarette companies for any cigarettes purchased for resale. Cigarette manufacturers offer incentive programs for their retailers. Both types of membership cost $55 per year, as of 2015.
Costco offers an Executive Membership upgrade to both Gold Star and Business members for an additional $55 per year. Most purchases made through an Executive Membership earn a 2 percent reward on purchases for the member. Executive members also have access to other special benefits, such as discounts on check printing, payroll services, identity protection and a variety of travel benefits. Costco also offers a bonus to money market and online investing accounts. Vehicles covered through the Costco automotive insurance program also receive free roadside assistance.
