People who hold advanced degrees and possess work experience in the field of human resources are eligible to become PHR certified. Candidates must pay a fee and adhere to ethical standards. They have to take a three-hour test. The test is computer-based and contains 175 multiple-choice questions. Candidates can register for the exam through the HR Certification Institute. They can take the exam two times a year, either between Nov. 1 and Jan. 31 or between May 1 and July 31.
PHR certifications are valid for three years. Those who want to renew their expired certifications have to retake the exam or demonstrate professional development. Certification holders who do not want to retake the exam must earn 60 recertification credits. Candidates can earn up to 20 credits from watching webcasts that do not feature any tests. They can earn an unlimited number of credits through the HR Certification Institute eLearning program. Individuals who become certified in Professional in Human Resources and renew their certifications exhibit mastery of functions of human resources and U.S. laws.
The PHR certification is for professionals who have a technical orientation and focuses on program implementation in the human resources department. Certification holders can make a note on their business cards and business correspondences to distinguish themselves as human resources specialists.Learn more about HR
